Abdon Punzo
The difference between artists and artesans, if there is one, is practically invisible in the
works of Abdon Puzon Angel. He is known as "THE artesan of copper" in the community of Santa Clara
del Cobre, Michoacan, famous since the time of Cortez for its mastering of forging and hammering
copper. Abdon has taken it to new heights and won many prestiagious international awards.
He was born September 17, 1955, the fifth son of a family of artesans of copper.
Abdon began his apprenticeship working in the family business when he was 5 years old doing simple
activities, preparing ingots and working the bellows to heat the fires for forging at high
temperatures, hammering and shaping the copper ingots into at first small pieces, then graduating
to transform larger utilitarian pieces into beautiful objects and sculpture.
Learning to master the secrets of the copper smithing trade has been his life's work. A true artist
with a unique perception of his medium.
