The Story of Galeria Corona
|
Galeria Corona, a popular fine art gallery located in the heart of Puerto Vallarta, offers wide
ranging works from a variety of artists from Mexico City and Guadalajara. And to think that the
owner Artemisa Hicks and her
niece Vivian Ireta Lino began just to have "fun".
Artemisa Hicks opened Galeria Corona three years ago because she thought it would be fun to
run the art gallery with her niece Vivian.
"We just started playing and now it is a triving business" Hicks says. "I came to Puerto Vallart
just to spend a year relaxing. Then Vivian came to visit and fell in love with the place."
Artemisa is from Mexico City and is married to her husband Cordell Hicks a retired stockbroker
from Albuquerque, New Mexico where they lived until 1995. After her husband retired she got into
the art business when they moved to Morelia, the colonial capital of Michoacan and an important
cultural center. In Morelia she opened her first gallery, and met many of the artists whose work she
currently represents here in Puerto Vallarta.
Every two weeks Galeria Corona features a different artist with a solo show. The Gallery is filled
with all sorts of media: silver jewelry, embroidered pillows, wooden and bronze sculpture,
terracotta figures in addition to the main attraction of the paintings covering the walls.
Some of the most eye-catching objects are the copper masterpieces of Abdon Puzon. Puzon was
raised in Santa Clara de Cobre, Michoacan, famed for centuries for their copper artisans. He was
trained from the time he could walk in the art of refining and shaping copper. The expertize shows
in the geometrical complexity of his oversized urns.
